What will you use this sit on top kayak for?

from: Deb Andersen

Purchasing a sit on top kayak can be quite a daunting task because there are now kayaks designed for virtually every possible use. You have to know exactly what you are going to use it for or you will be dissatisfied with it.

Here are some questions to consider before you buy your sit on top kayak:

What will you use this kayak for?

Will you be using it alone or are you going to take your spouse, child or dog?

Are you looking for action or adventure, exercise, or solitude?

Will you be using it for surfing, white water, fishing, diving, open ocean, touring, or camping?

You will find help in choosing the right model sit on top kayak by asking a salesperson at a kayak shop but you should also find a second opinion from a kayaking friend, or an instructor, or even Internet forums. Aslo study magazines and books.

More considerations:

Speed - Longer and thinner will be faster

Stability - Wider will be more stable

Shorter - Will be more maneuverable

Size - Is it large enough to hold all your gear.

Will it hold the weight of your cargo including the people or person. You will want to get the manufacturers supply specifications on each boat you are considering. Some come with hatches, others don't but can be added at a later installation. Study the features.

Are you going to be driving to the launch site? If so, do you have the right roof rack system so that you can launch it yourself or load it back on the roof rack system by yourself? Some roof racks are made to fit particular car models whereas some fit all models. Research this carefully. Is your choice of rack going to fit your care securely? Are you sure it is the right model for your vechicle? Use the best quality tie downs available.

When you are away on a trip, far from home or in rough conditions you will be depending on your gear. Under these conditions the best quality gear will be essential. But if you will be kayking just once in a while for short distances then lower qualitly gear is fine.

Here is a list of necessary gear:

Life Jacket or PDF (personal flotation device) Required by law everywhere. Make sure it fits and does not restrict your paddling movement. There are life jackets made to fit women, children, and even dogs.

Paddle Leash

Knee straps

Back Rest

Bow Line

Dry Bags

Anchor

Tie-on Straps

See the the kayak equipment link to your left for more indepth list of equipment.

Final note: Be sure you have the right paddle for your sit on top kayak and know how you plan to use it.

If these guys were surfers who ignored shark warnings and got eaten by sharks, you'd likely be passing along joke 'darwin award' emails about them to your friends. So please tone down the self-righteousness. We acknowledge the tragedy of these deaths ...
